It used to be in the olden days of social media (like, 6 months ago) that you needed to have 25 ‘likes’ on your Facebook page to create a custom URL (aka Vanity URL). Now it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3… and you can do it right from the beginning when you set up your page.
What is a custom Facebook URL?
When you create your page, Facebook automatically assigns a gobbledygook number to the end of your Facebook page address if you don’t ask for a custom URL. It’s nonsense to most anyone but a computer and looks something like this: https://www.facebook.com/pages/yourbusiness/229143020556777.
Not very pretty. When you have a custom URL, all those confusing numbers get dumped off the end, and you get to simply display the name of your business (or self) at the end. Nice and clean!
Why would you care about a custom URL?
Aside from just looking cleaner and being more memorable, having a custom URL stakes your claim on your business name forever in Facebook, and helps to establish brand consistency across all of your digital platforms. No one else can claim that vanity URL as long as you own it. Additionally, having this helps in campaigns, promotions, or giveaways.
But maybe the biggest reason to claim your custom Facebook URL is for SEO. Search engine algorithms give a lot of weight to social media profiles these days, and the easier it is for them to find your business, the more likely it is that you’ll show up higher in the search rankings for your industry and niche. Simply put, people will be able to find your business easier.
How do I create my Facebook Vanity URL?
Most businesses already have a Facebook page, even if they haven’t claimed their custom URL, so it’s really just a matter of taking the following steps:
1. Go to your Facebook page and click on your page name on the top right so you land on the Admin Panel.
2. Click on Edit Page and then Edit Settings.
3. Click Page Info to reveal the Change web address link where you will be able to enter your business name and create your custom Facebook pages URL.
